Our lovely house is available to rent when we are travelling ourselves, and we’ll be gone for three weeks between 20th January and 10th February. There are four bedrooms, each with it’s own bath or shower room. The house itself is rather beautiful. The cantina dates from the late mediaeval period, when the piazza was a military piazza and housed the baron’s horses and soldiers, and the upper floors date from the 18th to 19th century. These floors have vaulted ceilings with frescoes. We have furnished the house with a mixture of antiques and modern furniture, and some pieces that we had made from reclaimed wood and cast iron. The sofas and beds are modern, and very comfortable! There is gas central heating and very efficient cast-iron radiators. There is a wood-burner in the main salone and a wood-burning range in the kitchen, but neither is necessary for heating the house.
There is so much to do in the area it’s difficult to mention everything here, but as it’s winter now, I’m going to focus on what you can do when it’s cold! If you like mountains you will probably be interested in skiing or boarding at one of three resorts that are all about 40 minutes drive from the house. There is endless walking and the landscape is stunning. Recently a guide book was published with a map of the area and all the footpaths (that are now also signposted). In the winter some of the paths might be impassable, but there isn’t always snow on the ground. One winter can vary enormously from the previous one.

The roads are always cleared pretty quickly, and gritted all winter, and within an hour’s (stunning) drive, there are castles, picturesque chapels with beautiful artwork, pristine rivers, high plateaus. There is a supermarket about 15 minutes drive away, and you can buy all the essentials here. But if there is food that’s not Italian that you can’t live without, you should bring it with you. This is a traditional area and you won’t be finding good tea or a pot of Marmite locally, or graham crackers for your s’mores. 🙂 On the other hand, you can buy hundreds of kinds of pasta and cheap, but quality wine and olive oil (cheap in comparison with the UK).

So it’s a bit remote. But this is part of the appeal too. There are very few tourists here, even Italian ones, and very, very few foreigners. If you already know where Abruzzo is, then you are in a small minority. And we’re only about and hour and 45 minutes from Rome and its two international airports. Our local city, L’Aquila (about 25 minutes away) is the regional capital, and there you will find brand names you recognise if you need to!
