Our home is in northwestern Connecticut, in a rural town with a big heart for nature enjoyment and outdoors activities – kayak on the river 1 mile from our home, hike in the hills and state forest in town, tons of biking, river tubing, etc. If you visit in the summer/early autumn months you can be listed as the pickup person for our weekly CSA share at a local “beyond organic” farm, where you can harvest much of your own fruit and veg at no expense to you (local meats and cheeses also available at the farm store there). We also keep extremely low maintenance free-range chickens whose eggs you would be welcome to, seasonally, in exchange for their minimal care. We should be able to leave one of our cars for your use – 6-8 passenger capacity depending on which.
Our home is 3 bedroom/2 bath with potential for more sleeping space to be arranged. Bedroom 1 is a king size floor mat (Japanese style futon) with available crib mattress to lay beside for easy co-sleeping. Bedroom 2 is 2 twin beds and 1 toddler bed. Bedroom 3 is a full size antique 4-poster bed. All mattresses and bed linens are chemical-free. We also have a queen size air mattress that can be set up in one of the bedrooms or in the living room if we rearrange the space a bit – large families welcome! Our children are 8, 5, 3, and 1, so we have bikes and simple Waldorf-style toys available for that age range. The main floor bathroom has a lovely open whirlpool tub and separate shower. Our kitchen table can seat 6 easily, 8 if arranged properly, and the dining space is big enough to set up an additional table for larger groups.
Our property is 2.5 acres adjacent to 30 acres of forest, secluded away from the road – lovely views into the hills from our backyard. Out the back door you’ll find a spacious deck with a grill for outdoor cooking opening up into the backyard with a wooden playscape and lots to explore. A small brook winds through the side of the property, although it can dry up when there hasn’t been much rain. We have many wild edibles in the yard; depending on the season that you visit you might stumble on wild strawberries, wild grapes, black raspberries, autumn olives, crab apples, edible and medicinal herbs, along with a steadfast rhubarb plant that volunteers in our garden every year and makes a delicious pie! Pleasant Valley, where we live, is 2.5 hours from NYC (or 1-1.5 hrs to catch the train the rest of the way in), 2 hours from Boston, and surrounded by many small towns with that quirky New England charm. 🙂
